Who we are
History
The Harold Washington American Legion Post 1987 is a veteran's organization located in Chicago, Illinois. It is named in honor of Harold Washington, Chicago's first African American mayor, who served in the Army during World War II.
Programs
Our initiatives include suicide prevention, mental health support, and youth programs that promote leadership. The post also sponsors a veterans program that has been featured on CAN-TV, a Chicago public access channel
“Victory abroad against the fascist Axis powers.”
“Victory at home against racism and segregation.”
This effort began in 1942 after a letter from a Black cafeteria worker, James G. Thompson, was published in the Pittsburgh Courier
